Like so many of us, I was sorely surprised and sad Like so many of us, I was sorely surprised and saddened to hear of Cassandra Wilson’s passing. I was just signing to Blue Note when she was HITTING with “Blue Light ’Til Dawn”. When we had the chance to hang and / or record together, she could have pulled all kinds of diva moves, but she never did. She was so grounded in the roots and earth I’m not sure she even had that silly kind of energy in her.

Cassandra was an esentials-only singer — no wasted or extraneous licks, gestures or notes. She sang only what was necessary to deliver the powerful and resonant vibrations emating from her heart and riding on her voice. We are all poorer for the loss of the records and concerts she would have made as she moved into the deeper wisdom of advanced age.

Lady Cassandra, I bow to you.
