"Two icons of avant-garde jazz — saxophonist-composer Ornette Coleman and pianist-composer Andrew Hill — were celebrated with highest honors at the 2007 Jazz Journalists Association Jazz Awards, during a luncheon at the Jazz Standard on June 28, attended by some 100 movers and shakers of the national jazz scene.
"Voting members of the JJA, a non-profit professional organization, cited Coleman, who received a Pulitzer Prizer earlier in 2007, as Musician of the Year, Alto Saxophonist of the Year; named Sound Grammar, his quartet release on his own Sound Grammar label, Record of the Year and the quartet itself Small Group of the Year. Hill, who died of lung cancer on April 20, was voted the Jazz Award for Lifetime Achievement in Jazz, Jazz Composer of the Year, and Pianist of the Year; he had performed in trio as recently as weeks before his death."

The Jazz vocalist's new album and Concord Records debut, has shot up the weekly Jazz album chart landing itself at #1 since being released just 3 weeks ago (4.3.07).
Kurt Elling has attained elite status in the jazz world before reaching the age of 40. Riding to international prominence on the strength of his critically acclaimed performances as well as a string of stellar recordings for the Blue Note label, the perennial poll-winner has become the voice of a new generation of jazz fans. He's been called "the most flamboyantly creative jazz singer to emerge in the last decade" by the San Francisco Chronicle and was recently named Down Beat's Male Vocalist of the Year in both Critics and Readers polls for 2006 (the third time he's won the top spot in both polls).
On Nightmoves, his brilliant debut for Concord Records and seventh outing overall, Elling artfully blends his rich baritone voice with signature scatting and virtuosic vocalese in a wide-ranging repertoire of tunes associated with such greats as Frank Sinatra, Antonio Carlos Jobim, Irving Berlin, Betty Carter, Duke Ellington, Dexter Gordon and Keith Jarrett. His most ambitious undertaking to date, it features his working trio of bassist Rob Amster, drummer Willie Jones III and longtime creative partner, pianist-arranger Laurence Hobgood, along with such special guests as The Escher String Quartet, bassist Christian McBride, Yellowjackets tenor saxophonist Bob Mintzer, guitarist Guilherme Monterio, keyboardist Rob Mounsey and harmonica virtuosos Howard Levy and Gregoire Maret.

Backstage.com has awarded Kurt Elling its 2007 Bistro award as major jazz vocalist for his Birdland performances last year. The gala awards ceremony is in April.
The Back Stage Bistro Awards recognize achievement in a wide variety of categories — from outstanding performances to outstanding accomplishments and contributions by members of the cabaret community. New categories can be drawn up each year as they best describe the recipients, and categories may be dropped as well.
The object is not to choose "the best," but to congratulate those who have done something special during the year.
