Post Post subject: Private lessons with KE      Posted: Thu Jan 14, 2010 12:59 pm Reply with quote

Dear Friends,

Thanks to popular ongoing demand, in addition to tracking a new recording this March, I am considering setting up a few days to give private lessons at a studio here in NYC. I would make two days available for one-hour individual sessions near the end of the month. The fee would be two hundred fifty dollars per session and would include an accompanist (potentially but not necessarily Laurence Hobgood, inasmuch as he may already have a full schedule, depending on dates.)

Does this interest any of you?

Best,

KE

Hi Kurt,

I'm a jazz vocalist currently studying in my last year at Berklee College of Music in Boston, MA. My friend introduced me to your music during my first semester and I've loved listening to it ever since. Last year, I saved up some money and had the chance to see you perform at Scullers during the Beantown Jazz Festival; it was a stellar performance.

I'd take great pleasure in the chance to have a private lesson with you in New York City.

Looking forward to hearing more details soon.

Best,
Dan

I live in Maine, and I would travel to New York for this. Kurt, you're the reason that I started singing jazz in the first place.

Hello Mr. Elling,

I am very interested! It would be such an honor to meet you and learn from you.

I live in Dayton, OH and would be more than willing to travel to NYC for a lesson.

Thank you, and I look forward to hearing more about this in the near future!

Wow! It's cool to see so many people not just interested in a lesson with Kurt but willing to travel for it. Cool

Please pass the word to anyone you think might be interested. Apparently geography isn't a limiting factor.

And if you know teachers in any of great the jazz programs in the Northeast, please let them know about this fabulous opportunity so they can tell their students.

Kurt only mentioned the possibility of dates at the end of March, but if there's lots of popular demand, maybe he'll schedule more. We can always hope.

Private lessons from a master at the top of his game (and always growing) -- it doesn't get much better than this!

Post Post subject: With One Note Bring Me Home      Posted: Fri Jan 22, 2010 4:40 pm Reply with quote

pianist62, have you seen the Feb. 2010 issue of JazzTimes? There's a very interesting piece by Thomas Conrad, "With One Note Bring Me Home: Singers, pianists, and the art of accompaniment."

Conrad writes about and quotes Laurence Hobgood, Hank Jones, Fred Hersch, Bill Charlap, Pete Malinverni, Patricia Barber, and Bill Anschell.

It's not on the JazzTimes.com site, but definitely worth trying to find. May still be on the newstand.

The title comes from this from singer Madeline Eastman who's accompanied by Bill Anschell:
Quote:
"You have to trust each other," Eastman concludes. "Sometimes I'll go really far out and I'll realize, 'Oh oh, I've gone too far.' That's when I need my piano player. A really good piano player can bring me home with one note."

And on a recent episode of Piano Jazz, Marian McPartland tells Elvis Costello about Tommy Flanagan's number one tip for accompanying a singer: Never play the melody. Listen at http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=122608945

Post Post subject: Scheduling times for private lessons in March      Posted: Tue Jan 26, 2010 7:18 pm Reply with quote

Kurt asked us to post this for him while he prepares for the Grammy Pre-Telecast this week.

The current dates for lessons in New York are Monday and/or Tuesday of the second week in March -- March 8th and/or 9th.

For everyone who's responded with interest in taking a private lesson, please send a private e-mail to teaching@kurtelling.com and indicate whether either of those dates works for you. Please include your access information, too (in addition to e-mail, your address and phone).

The next possible time for private lessons with Kurt is sometime in May -- dates TBA.

If you have interest in this fabulous opportunity, either in March or at a later date, please e-mail teaching@kurtelling.com so your name will be on the list for future information and updates.

Many thanks!
