From Bobby Reed, Backstage at the Grammys, Chicago Sun-Times, February 1, 2010:
| Quote: | Ninth time's a charm
On a Grammy night when fans of Chicago musicians didn't have a lot to cheer about, one of the bright spots was the victory by jazz vocalist Kurt Elling, who finally took home the gold after being nominated nine times. His release "Dedicated To You: Kurt Elling Sings The Music of Coltrane and Hartman" was named best jazz vocal album. Elling was tapped to co-host the pre-telecast Grammy ceremony on Sunday afternoon, which was a strong hint that this would be the year that he would not go home empty-handed.
Backstage, the sharp-dressed jazz man was in a joyous mood. He bounded onto the stage of the press room and boomed, "Writers, I'll give you some facts: My ninth nomination, first win, very relieved. It makes my wife very much happier with everybody."
In a more serious moment, Elling said, "It's an incredible thing to me that every one of the records I have sent out into the world has been nominated, including the very first one, which Blue Note just licensed. I made that basically in a garage for about ten grand. They picked it up, and I ended up at the Grammys for the first time in 1995."
Elling will be performing at the Green Mill in March, a fact that he shared with the assembled international press corps. His victory is well deserved. |
