Dave Was reviewed the new Columbia 70 CD set of Miles Davis' catalog on NPR the other day. He ended it with the line:
Quote:
I like to think of the album as the most accomplished chamber music of its day: not just the best jazz, a term that Davis regarded as insulting and nearly racist. In his own words, "I was always just trying to hear something new."
That quote of Miles' has haunted me for two days. Does anyone have any memory of the context that was set in? I can't find it in the Kahn book on KOB, and google just returns the review. Any ideas? It's so perfect and analogous to my own feelings on man's pursuit of his deepest expression.

I do love Google and all the search tricks I've learned over the years Smile. Makes it fun to go on treasure hunts like these.

From Miles: The Autobiography, by Miles Davis and Quincy Troupe, 1990, page 389:
Quote:
As far as where my music is going, I'm always trying to hear something new.

Wow, you're good Trudy! Thank you. That's going next to Einstein in my artist's statement.

OK, this is very freaky. I have just reconnected with an old friend after 26 years, and we have been spending a decent amount of time catching up over the last couple of months. Last night, she gave me a present, and what should I get but a first edition of this very book!!! It is strange, because I just got this book for my uncle(paperback on amazon, I sort of feel as though I cheaped out on him after getting this hard cover first edition from my friend) so it was strange to open my present and find this book. I even mentioned to my uncle that I would like to read it once he is done with it. I don't know how she knew or who she asked, or if it was purely by coincidence, but it is something I will read/consume this weekend while at my Mom's listening to her Sirius jazz station going in the background!

Another coincidence is that I just saw this movie An Education, great movie if you can find it. Great sets, and it takes place back in the early 60's London. Lots of great music and a couple of great jazz scenes. It is also the first time I was introduced to Juliette Gréco(yes, I need to get out more), and I really love her voice. But as I was paging thru the book last night, I noticed that the first time Miles went to Paris, he ended up hooking up and spending time with Juliette, which, I did not realize, as I was just introduced to her.

Kurt and his 6 degrees, thanks to Rev and Trudy, this will be a very nice weekend reading thru this, even if it may not be for the faint of heart!!!

Might I suggest as a soundtrack to your reading Ascenseur Pour L'échafaud, which was of course a soundtrack to the movie of that name. It's some of Miles' very best work and has a good deal of suggestion of the ground he was about to break with KOB. Very atmospheric, and probably is what most soundtrack writers have in mind when they try to write gritty themes for noir-et-blanc detective or street-themed movies.
